Switching to DXKeeper from Another Logging Application

If you've been using another logging application for any significant length of time, your use of it is likely automatic. Don't expect to replicate that level of familiarity within a few days; it will likely take several weeks to attain that comfort level with DXKeeper.

Given the many variables involved, this roadmap identifies situations where your specific situation will dictate how to proceed; such situations are marked ask for help:

  1. review Getting Started with DXLab

  2. join the DXLab Discussion Group: all questions are welcome there, no matter how many times they may have already been asked and answered, or how obvious the answer may be in the documentation

  3. direct your logging application to export your QSOs to an ADIF file
    1. if you have maintained separate log files based on the callsign you used over-the-air or on the location from which you were operating, ask for help

  4. if records in the exported file do not each include a DXCC field that specifies each QSO's DXCC entity, see the Recovering each QSO's DXCC entity section in Importing QSOs

  5. direct DXKeeper to import the ADIF file created in step 3

    1. if every QSO in the ADIF file being imported was made using the same callsign over-the-air, specify that callsign in the Replacement Options panel on DXKeeper's Main window's Import QSOs tab before initiating the import process, and check the box to the left of the phrase Station Callsign

    2. if you are using DX4WIN, DXBase, Hamlog, Logger16, Logic, N3FJP, Swisslog, TurboLog, WinLog32 or WriteLog, set the ADIF style options panel accordingly on DXKeeper's Main window's Import QSOs tab before initiating the import process

    3. if DXKeeper reports a large number of errors when importing QSOs, ask for help

  6. check to see if each QSO in your log specifies the callsign you used over the air when making the QSO in its Station Callsign item

    1. the currently-selected QSO's Station Callsign item is displayed in the Auxiliary panel on DXKeeper's Main window's Log QSOs tab

    2. you can add a column for the Station Callsign item to the Log Page Display

    3. if your logged QSOs do not display the correct Station Callsign, ask for help.

  7. if you've made QSOs from more than one geographic location, then ask for help.

  8. on DXKeeper's Main window's Check Progress tab, click the Recompute button

    1. review and correct any errors it reports
    2. if the number of errors is large, ask for help

  9. on the DXKeeper's Configuration window's Awards tab, specify the awards you are pursuing

  10. direct DXKeeper to display statistics for each award you're pursuing

    1. compare these to the statistics displayed by your previous logging applicaton
    2. resolve any inconsistencies
    3. if the number of inconsistencies is large, ask for help

  11. if you pursue awards that accept LoTW confirmations,
    1. configure DXKeeper for interaction with LoTW

    2. sync your log with LoTW

  12. if you pursue awards that accept eQSL confirmations,
    1. configure DXKeeper for interaction with eQSL

    2. sync your log with eQSL

  13. configure DXKeeper for logging new QSOs

  14. your computer will fail: prevent the loss of data and settings!
