  • open the Windows Control Panel

  • in the System applet, open the Device Manager (in Windows XP, its accessible via the Hardware tab; in Windows 8, via Hardware and Sound)

  • expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section by clicking the + symbol to its left

  • double-click the USB Serial Converter entry for that your USB-to-Serial-Port Adapter

  • in Windows XP, the Manufacturer is shown in the Properties window's General tab; in Windows 7, select the Properties window'sthe Details tab
