Transceivers capable of [:AFSKFSK:FSK] operation generally provide a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transistor–transistor_logic TTL] input (voltage levels +5 VDC, 0 VDC) that controls the switching between Mark and Space frequency generation:

All of these signals employ [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rs232 RS-232] voltage levels (+12 VDC, -12 VDC), so an external level converter is required.
